What type of theoretical approach do you use in adult counselling sessions?

We are both Family Systems trained through Pacific Coast Family Therapy Institute. We are also on the faculty of the Neufeld Institute and use the approach of developmental psychologist, Dr. Gordon Neufeld.  For more information about the institute and Dr. Neufeld’s developmental paradigm, please visit www.neufeldinstitute.com.

Through years of study and clinical practice, our approach is influenced by Jungian psychology, depth psychology, developmental psychology, attachment theory, and Eastern spirituality. Each client has a different style of learning and growing and how we approach a therapeutic session depends on the individual client.

How long is a parent consultation or counselling session?

A  session is 50 minutes.

Will you answer questions via email?

We only correspond through email for scheduling changes. Any concerns or questions of a therapeutic nature will be dealt with during a scheduled session.

In a parent consultation session, do you need to see my child ?

We work with parents to guide them and help make sense of the challenges they face with their child. We do not need to see the child to be able to assess the problems and provide support for intervention.

Do you counsel children or teenagers? (Please note: We are not taking on any new teen clients at this time)

We do work with adolescents (children over 12 years).  During these one hour sessions, we provide a safe, caring space for the adolescent to express what exists inside, whether it be anger, grief, disappointment, excitement, sadness, or whatever emotion they are feeling.  We gently help the adolescent to reflect on their experiences, their dreams, hopes, fears, disappointment, to that they become more conscious of themselves and can further develop their sense of self as a maturing individual.

Typically, we do not work with children under 12, but rather work with the parent or guardian to deepen the attachment with their child and support the parent to makes sense of the child’s behaviour so the parent can raise the child in a way that is developmentally appropriate. For more information, please read the Parent Consultation section on our Private Practice page.

What is your cancellation policy?

We require 48 hours notice when needing to cancel appointments or the session fee will be charged.

Will the sessions be covered by my extended health plan?

Our designation is Registered Professional Counsellors with the Canadian Professional Counsellor’s Association.  Some extended health plans do cover session fees. Please check with your insurance company for details.
