Parent Consulting

Patti (Vancouver) and Colleen (West Vancouver)  offer parent consultations for parents by phone or in person at our offices. We work with parents of children from toddlers to adulthood.

Based on the theories and approach of Dr. Gordon Neufeld, we help make sense of a child’s behaviour and how parents can not only understand the behaviour from a developmental perspective, but how the parent can provide what the child needs. This approach is rooted in developmental theory—the theory that children  learn, thrive, and reach their full human potential through secure, unconditional relationships with their parents and/or the adults who care for them.  We support parents who are dealing with their children’s challenging, troubling, or confusing behaviour, and help them find ways to preserve their relationship with their children despite their struggles.

We support parents in dealing with a variety of challenges such as:

  • Discipline that harms the parent/child relationship
  • Resistance and defiance
  • Dominance
  • Aggression
  • Anxiety
  • Grief and loss
  • Separation and divorce
  • Sibling rivalry
  • Bullying
  • Child/teacher relationships
  • Raising a sensitive child
  • Raising a child with special challenges such as : autism, attention deficit disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, giftedness, etc.

Dr. Gordon Neufeld’s Approach  (see more at www.neufeldinstitute.com)

Dr. Neufeld is a developmental psychologist with over 40 years of experience working with children, youth and the adults responsible for them. He is a leading international authority on child development and the role that secure child/parent relationships play in the maturation, learning and socialization of children.

Dr. Neufeld is a developmental psychologist with over 35 years of experience working with children, youth and the adults responsible for them. He is a leading international authority on child development and the role that secure child/parent relationships play in the maturation, learning and socialization of children. His work focuses on the importance of the adult/child relationship.  His book Hold On to Your Kids: Why Parents Need to Matter More Than Peers, brought international attention to the crucial role that attachment issues play in the development of children.

We are currently witnessing the tragic consequences of the loss of this healthy child/adult attachment—consequences that include increased anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, aggression, bullying, the formation of gangs or cliques at school, drug addiction, and suicide. Dr. Neufeld’s translates his theoretical framework for understanding child development (and the role of attachment) into accessible, readily available models, which have brought his developmental paradigm alive for countless numbers of parents, educators, medical professionals, child care workers and their respective agencies. Neufeld’s model sheds light on the most urgent needs of our children today, and empowers parents and people who care about children to take action that will result in healthier children and a saner society.
